Millenium park – Kolkata

Proposed

This design proposal envisions a vibrant, inclusive, and contemporary riverfront public realm along the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata. Conceived as a seamless extension of the city’s urban fabric, the project aims to transform the waterfront into a dynamic destination for leisure, recreation, culture, and community engagement.

The master plan introduces a continuous elevated promenade with sculptural curves that follow the natural flow of the river, offering uninterrupted panoramic views of the water. Thoughtfully designed pedestrian pathways—highlighted by a distinct red circulation spine—connect multiple activity zones, ensuring intuitive movement and accessibility for visitors of all age groups.

Key features include landscaped gardens with native and tropical planting, shaded seating areas, interactive open plazas, and recreational pockets that encourage social interaction. A centrally located circular activity pavilion serves as a focal point for gatherings, cafés, and events, while viewing decks and amphitheatre-style platforms extend over the water, creating immersive riverfront experiences.

The design integrates multi-level walkways, jogging tracks, children’s play areas, and flexible open spaces for cultural performances and public events. Light architectural elements, tensile canopies, and viewing bridges add visual interest while providing shade and comfort. The proposal also responds sensitively to its context, maintaining visual connectivity between the city, the river, and existing transport corridors.

Overall, the project aspires to redefine Kolkata’s relationship with its river—creating a landmark waterfront destination that celebrates movement, nature, and community, while promoting sustainable urban living and enhancing the city’s public infrastructure.
